Does LG make smartphones anymore?

The answer is no. As of 2023, LG does not manufacture smartphones any longer. On 5 April 2021, LG officially stated on its website that it had closed its smartphone business worldwide.

LG is known for its high-quality home appliances. As an electronics device manufacturing company, LG stepped into the field of cellphone business in 2009.

In April 2009, LG started its phone business journey by releasing a feature phone powered by Android named LG GW620. The first phone attracted people’s attention due to its unique design and aesthetics.

Like the LG GW620, several models of LG created massive attention. The sales of those phones were higher than many old phone manufacturers, such as Nokia.

However, 2010 to 2015 was the period when people were getting more and more comfortable with smartphones.

On the other hand, LG added features, such as the pro mode in camera, that people could not get used to at that time.

As a result, LG’s sales started to drop due to the complexity of its products, though the product quality was far better than most of the companies.

Because the company was not profiting from its phones, it shut down its phone production.

Why has LG stopped making phones

Why has LG stopped making phones?

LG phones had a reputation and massive fanbase worldwide. However, it was not enough, and the company was accounting for losses in the phone business every year. As a result, LG had to stop smartphone production.

It is not like LG faced losses in its smartphone division for two to three years only. Years of negative revenue forced the company to shut down its phone manufacturing facility to reduce losses.

The smartphone market is one of the world’s most competitive and saturated markets. Many companies, such as Nokia, Blackberry, HTC, etc., have lost track. LG is one of them.

In the beginning, LG was doing great in the phone market. However, around 2013, when brands, such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Google, etc., were trying to produce phones with high and smooth performance, LG was adding features.

Though LG smartphones were packed with features, their performance was not even near the mid-range phones of the other companies. As a result, negative sales of LG were initiated.

Before shutting down the phone manufacturing division for good, LG started focusing on performance-centric phones. However, the damage had been done already. People had already lost interest in LG smartphones by then.

What was the last LG phone manufactured?

The last LG phone was LG Velvet 5G. Though the company announced it would release LG Velvet 2 Pro, it did not because of the shutting down of the company.

LG released its final model, LG Velvet 5G, on 7 May 2020, with 5G technology. Though LG was a feature-focused company, LG Velvet was a performance-centric smartphone.

All the high-performance elements of that following year were available in that LG phone. Some of the components of that phone are given below to see at a glance:

  • 6.8 inches P-OLED display
  • LG UX
  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G (7 nm)
  • UFS 2.1
  • Upgradable up to Android version 13

In a word, the phone’s performance was up to the mark. However, LG’s sales did not grow, even though the phone was recommendable. Thus, LG quit making phones.

Does LG still work in 2023?

LG has stopped manufacturing smartphones. However, it did not pause software support. The latest phones of this company will get security updates up to 2025.

Therefore, if you desire to use an LG phone, it is a perfect time to get one. Because two years later, LG phones will no longer be in workable conditions.
